The Gita-govinda of Jayadeva Chapters 1, 2, 6 and 7 CHAPTER 1 1. Victory to the love-play of R`adh`a and Krishna at every copse on the banks of the Yamun`a; they had set out at the instruction of Nanda - "The sky is dense with clouds [the rainy season is the traditional of love]. The forest lands are dark with tamala trees. This man is frightened at night. You yourself take him home, R`adh`a". 2. ... 3. ... 4. ... 5. ... 6. Ke-ava! having taken on the form of a tortoise, the world (??ksitir) stands on your very wide back, which has is venerable/very heavy (gariunhe) with its rink of scar-tissue (kina) caused by carrying the earth. Triumph Hari, lord of the world 7. ...having taken on the form of the boar. O you of ten forms, the earth lives on your tusk, submerged like a dark digit (kalanka-kala) on the moon. Triumph Hari, lord of the world 8. O ke-ava, having taken on the form of the man-lion. The claw on your excellent lotus-hand, with its wondrous point, has torn apart (dalita) the bee-like body of Hiraoyaka-ipu. Triumph Hari, lord of the world 9. O ke-ava, having taken on the form of the dwarf. You cheat Bali with your wide steps. Wondrous dwarf, the purification of people is achieved by the water from your toenail. Triumph Hari, lord of the world 10. You wash the world [so that it has] a gone-away evil [BV] with/in [loc] a pool of kshatriya blood, and a calmed torment of existence (shamita-bhava-tapam) 11. You bestow on the dirctions the offering of the crowns of Ravana [the 10-headed], desireable to the lords of the directions, the lovely offering. 12. You carry a garmetn which looks like a dark cloud which resembles the yamuna which comes to you from fear of the blow of you (the ploughman) 13. You blame the class of the vedas because of its sacrificial ritual which concerns (darshita) animal killing. You take the form of the buddha 14. You accomplish (kalayasi) the destruction (nidhana) of a multitude (nivaha) of barbarians, cleaving (them) apart with a sword that is somewhat like a meteor (dhumaketum, smoke-signal) 15. Hear these noble, pleasure-giving words of the poet Jayadeva, (about) the good water of existence 16. Homage to you, raising the vedas, supporting the world, tearing apart the demon (daitya), cheating Bali, holding power over Kshatriyas, conquering Ravana (pulastya), using the plough, spreading out compassion, dominating mlecchas: hail to Krsna who has done the ten deeds 17. Lying on/taking yourself to (srita) the breast-circle (kuca-mandala) wearing earings, forest garlands are worn (?) 18. Having the sun (day-jewel) as an ornament, breaking existence, a goose in the minds of sage-people (or a mental goose). 19. Excelling at killing the venomous Kalaya (snake-being), gratifying men, lord of the day for the lotus of the tribe of Yadu. 20. Having Garuda as a seat, destroying Madhu, Mura and Naraka, for the sake of the mirth of the tribe of gods. 21. Eye a shining lotus-eptal, freeing from existence, preserving beings in the three worlds 22. Having an ornament which is Sita, a departed dusana, an Ravana defeate in battle 23. Your beauty is a fresh raincloud, Mount Meru is carried, a partridge (drinks) the moon-eye of Sri. 24. We bow to your feet, so make wellbeing amongst those who bow down to you. 25. The poet Jayadeva makes this lucky, happy, splendid song 26. The breast of Krsna is stamped with saffron, which is adhering because of his embrace of the slope of the breast of Padma (Laksmi). Fulfil what is dear to you, like a flood of his... 27. A companion spoke this passionate word to Radha, who was wandering in the forest, her limbs very delicate like the flowers of the spring-creeper (?), having done many searches for Krsna, whose affection was growing because of her rapidly increasing condition of distress (?) 28. ?????When the gentle wind from the western Gats has touched the creepers on the charming clove trees with forest huts cooing of Koils mixed with the buzzing of honey-bees. O friend, endless for separated people????????????????/ 29. Lamentation is born for the young wives of travellers, mad with desire. Clusters of bakula-trees having clusters of trees full of flowers full of clusters of bees (?) 30. May the tamala trees which are garlanded with fresh leaves in whidch the mass of Kimsukas l;ook like the claws of love for tearing open teh hearts of young people. 31. in which teh blooms of the Kesara flower has the appearance of ???...??? love, in which the appearence of love's quiver is mad by teh clusters of begonia flowers, having bees/arrows which are gathered together 32. in which there is laughter produced by the young karuna trees the sight of the world has abandoned shame 33. which is charming with frangrence of passion and fragrant with the groups of fresh molati flowers which produces delusion even of the minds of sages, which is the ceaseless friend of the young 34. in which the frangrant mango (cyuta) is both bud-forming (mukalita) and bridling (?) because of the embrace of the ?jasmine? 35. This shining song of the lord Jayadeva is the essence (saram) of remembering the feet of Lord Hari, is a description of the forest at the time of passionate spring. CHAPTER 2 1. When Hari was roaming in the forest, undiscriminating in his lovemaking, R`adh`a had gone elsewhere, subject to the power of jealousy, because of the collapse (vigalita) of her own preeminence. Miserable (din`a) even though she was hidden (lin`a) somewhere in the greeper grove, her head made noisy by the circle of buzzing bees, she spoke to her friend: 2. My heart remembers Hari in love here, making jokes (kc,ta-parih`asam), playing (lit. having performed sporting), his joyful flute resounding with the soft sound from the nectar of his quivering lower lip, his earring shuddering on his cheep as his head waved in accordance with his wandering glances 3. ???? 4. greedy (lit. having gained greed) for cikksing the mouths of the group of lovely-hipped cowherds, the blossom of his honeyed lower lip a red flower, having a beautiful shining smile 5. having a thousand young cowherds embraced by his shoot-arms with widespread hair; the darkness broken by the rays from the pearl ornaments on his hands, feet and breast 6. His forehead (lal`anam) having a sandlewood tilaka-mark which surpasses the moon trembling (behind) a mass of clouds. His chest (lit. the door to his heart) pitiless in its crushing embrace of large breasts 7. His noble cheek adorned with an earrings which are entrancing with their jewelled crocodiles, clothed in yellow (pata), his excellent retinue consisting of the sages, mortals, gods and demons who follow him 8. Meeting me (militam) at the foot of a kadamba tree, calming my fear of the defilement of the dark age (or calming my fear of the time of darkness), somehow he causes me delight in my mind, with his tremulous loving gaze 9. This composition of Jayadeva, the form of which is the very beautiful romping of the enemy of Madhu, is suitable for meritorious people who are loyal (samprati) to the memory of the feet of Hari 10. It counts the group of merits (guoa-gr`amam), it does not consider his wanderings, even by mistake, it carries delight (paratouam), it pardons (vimuncati) his faults (douam) from afar, even while fickle (valat-tc,uoe) Krishna enjoys himself without me. Yet again my perverse (v`amam) mind loves him. What am I to do? 11. Having gone to his hut in the secrt (nibhc,ta) grove, where he remained (vasantam) hiding (nilaya) secretly at night, laughing with the burden of passion for his friend [? - ratr-rabhasa], while I was looking, trembling, in all directions. Friend! Make the noble slayer of Ke-i passionately (savik`aram) make love to me (ramaya) who is engrossed with desire for him [??] 12. Make the noble slayer of Ke-i - who was charming (anukulam) with hundreds of skillful flatterie, who had a fine garment on his hips made loose - passionately make love to me who is engrossed with desire for him, who was embarrassed at our first tryst, who spoke with sweet and gentle smiles 13. Make the noble slayer of Ke-i - who was lying for a long time on my own breast, who embraced me and kissed my lower lip - passionately make love to me who is engrossed with desire for him, who was lying on a bed of shoots, who was being kissed and embraced 14. Make the noble slayer of Ke-i - whose cheek is lovely with its rows of hair, who was restless (atilolam) because of intoxication through great love - passionately make love to me who is engrossed with desire for him, whose eyes were closed in weariness, whose entire body was covered in sweat 15. Make the noble slayer of Ke-i - who had mastered the procedures of the science of love, who had scratched the mass (bh`aram) of my dense chest with his nails - passionately make love to me who is engrossed with desire for him, who was moaning with the soft sound of the cuckoo, whose hair (kuntala) was strewn with loose flowers 16. Make the noble slayer of Ke-i - who has extensive love that is fulfilled [i.e. who has experienced a variety of sexual pleasure], who was giving kisses and seizing my hair [kaca-graha] - passionately make love to me who is engrossed with desire for him, whose jewelled anklets were made to resound by my feet, whose unfastened (vi-rnkhala) girdle (mekhala) was jangling 17. Make the noble slayer of Ke-i - whose lotus-eye was slightly closed, the slayer of Madhu, his passion having risen - passionately make love to me who is engrossed with desire for him, who was sleepy (alasa) with the passion of union in the pleasure of sex, whose creeper-body had fallen down meekly (nithsaha) 18. I see Govinda, the passionate (vil`asa) flute slipping from his hand, the gaze from the corner of his eye egging on the group of cowherdesses, whose crooked eyebrows are like creepers, the surface (sthalam) of his cheek (gaooa) wet with lots of sweat, looking at me modestly (vilajjitm) in the forest (kanane), his face innocent (mugdha) with the nectar (sudh`a) of his smile, encircled (vc,tam) by a group of Vraja women, 19. ... 20. ... CHAPTER 6 1. Her (female) friend, having seen her, long-devoted (anuraktam) in the creeper-house (lat`agc,he) unable to go (gantum), spoke (pr`aha) her doings in front of Govinda, who was languid with love 2. Lord Hari! R`adh`a sinks down in her bedroom. She sees your honour (when she is) in secret in every direction, drinking the sweet nectar of her lower lip 3. Hastening (valanta) in passion for her assignation with you she falls when she has gone only a few steps 4. With her bracelet (valay`a) made of pure lotus fibres and shoots, she lives in the world (iha) completely (param) because of your talent for lovemaking 5. She is accustomed to imagining "I am the enemy of Madhu", as she looks at the play of (your) ornaments at every moment 6. She says repeatedly to her friend "How does Hari not hasten to our rendezvous?" 7. She kisses and embraces the large darkness that resembles a raincloud, thinking that Hari has come 8. As your honour delays, she laments and weeps, a woman ready for the bedroom, her modesty vanished 9. May this composition of the poet -ri-jayadeva extend great joy among tasteful (or lust-filled) people 10. Cheat! The doe-eyed woman (mc,g`akua), fixed in meditation, sunk into an ocean of the passion of her thoughts of making love to you. She is uttering loud cries of 'sat', which are confused with emotional tones (k`aku) various cries, with noises born inside her, with loud cries of 'sat', with rows of bristling hair and senselessness born within her [??] 11. She makes an ornament with her limbs. She thinks that you have come when even a leaf moves, she spreads the bed, she thinks for a long time. Without you, this fine-bodied woman will not last the night, even though she is engaged in hundreds of playful games about arrangement of the bed (talpa-racan`a) and a diversity of ornaments (`akalpa-vikalpa) [?] 12. The words of Govinda triumph in the evening (s`ayam), having in their interior a benediction for guests, concealing in the presence of Nanda a speech to R`adh`a, by means of the mouth of a traveller: "Brother (bhr`antar), why do you rest under the Bh`aooara tree, the abode of the cobra [or, the abode of Krishna the hedonist], and not go to the joyful abode of Nanda, which is within sight of here?" CHAPTER 7 1. Meanwhile the moon, a sandlewood spot on the face of the beautiful woman of the sky, the glory of its stain (l`ancana) clearly visible, as if caused by its sin of obstructing the paths of groups of amorous women [who cannot sneak to trysts in the moonlight], illuminated [adapayad] the interior of Vc,nd`avana with a patchwork/lattice of rays 2. While the disc of the moon (lit. hare-bearer) was rising, and M`adhava was delaying (vihita-vilambe - had a done delay), that wretched woman (vidhur`a) sorrowfully (parit`apam) uttered aloud (uccaith, instrumental??) various lamentations 3. To whom do I go for refuge now, deceived by the words of friend-people? Hari - oh - does not go to the forest, even at the arranged time. This youth of mine is fruitless, even though it is spotless in form 4. This heart of mine is tormented by the uneven number of arrows [i.e. by the five arrows of the God of Love] because of he in pursuit of whom I would enter even a cave at night 5. Why do I hear the fire of separation unthinking, my body useless since even my death would be better? 6. Oh, the sweet spring night pains me: which lucky woman is embracing Hari? 7. Oh, I wear the jewelled ornaments, such as bracelets, which are a great pain because they carry the burning of separation from Hari 8. Even a garland (srag) strikes my body, tender as a flower, in the heart, because of the play of the arrow of Love, which is has a very terrible nature 9. I dwell here, not counting the flowers of the forest; the slayer of Madhu does not even remember me in his thoughts 10. May this composition of the poet Jayadeva, whose refuges is at the feet of Hari, live in (your) heart like a young woman, charming (komala) like the moon (kal`avati) 11. That he has not come even to the grove of creepers and ?plants? that was made a rendezvouz: is it that he is being embraced by some lovely woman, or is he being tied up in pleasures by his companions, or is he wandering in the dark forest, or is my beloved (k`antath) simply unable (akuamath) to set out on the road even a little way, his mind exhausted (kl`anta-man`a)? 12. This friend, having seem her dumb through despair (viu`ada-maak`am), come here without M`adhava, suspecting as though she had seen it that Hari (jan`ardhanam) was frolicking with somebody, said: 13. Which young woman of excellent qualities is playing with the enemy of Madhu, her clothes arranged suitably for the battle of love, her hair slightly dishevelled with the flowers fallen out of it? 14. Which young woman...her moon-face charming as her hair is let down, become weary by the vigour of his drinking her lower lip? 15. Which young woman...her cheek scrathced by her swaying earring, her rocking gait caused by her hips with their jangling girdle? 16. Which young woman...laughing coyly (modestly) at the clance of her lover, crying out in the passion of lovemaking with varied noises? 17. Which young woman...the curves (of her body) trembling because of his broad and hairy chest, her love bursting open as she closes her eyes? 18. ??? 19. Which young woman...her fortunate body carrying drops of sweat, fallen onto her breast, firm in the battle of love? 20. Which young woman of excellent qualities is playing with the enemy of Madhu? May the pleasure of Hari at this composition of glorious Jayadeva destroy the defilement of the dark age (kali) 21. This moon (vidhur), resembling the face of the eney of Mura gone pale because of separation, although it is stopping (? tirayann) my pain, yet the friend of the god of love (i.e. the moon) extends (tanonit) the lvoe-distress (madana-vy`atham) in my heart [??] 22. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a. He draws in musk a tilaka-mark like the hairy deer of the moon on the face of a lovely-woman in whom love has arisen, whose lips are turned for a kiss 23. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a, the deer-forest of the god of Love. He arranges [or is it 'arranging?] a kurabaka-flower, lovely like lightning (capal`a) on her hair, which resembles a dense cloud and turns the heads of young men 24. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a. He places a flawless jewel-necklace, a group of stars on the sky that is a very firm [or cloud-filled] pair of breasts, decorated with a moon of a nail-mark, sprinkled with beautiful musk [?] 25. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a. On the pair of soft arms which surpass pieces of lotus fibre, cold like snow, the palms of the hands lotus leaves (kara-tala-nalina-dale), he places a mass of beas in the form of (vitarati) a bracelet (valayam) of emerald (marakata) 26. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a. He strews (vikirati) a girdle (rasanam) consisting of gems, whih surpasses (hasanam) an archway (toraoa) on the broad part of her body (apaghane), the golden (kanaka) throne (asana) of love, on hips that are the home of love, where he has made his abode (kc,ta-v`asane) 27. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a. He generates (janayati) an outer cover (bahir apavaraoam) which is a mass of red lac (y`avaka) on her foot-shoot (carana-kisalaye), dark blue like a lotus, worshipped by a set of gems that are her nails, and placed on his heart (hc,di yojite) 28. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a. Friend! tell (vada) why I dwell for a long time here within a thicket (vinapodare), fruitlessly (aphalam) and without pleasure (virasam), when [?] the tricky brother of Balarama is energetically (subhc,-am) to some beautiful-eyed woman (sudc,-am)? [?] 29. Now the enemy of Madhu rejoices in a forest on the bank of the Yamun`a. Here let not the evil (durita) created (racita) by the dark age live long in Jayadeva the king of poets, who is a servant at the foot of the enemy of Madhu, proclaimer of passion, who has described the qualities of Hari. 30. Friend! Messenger! If the pitiless (nirdayo) cheat (-atas) has not come, then why do you burn (daayase)? He who has many lovers (bahu-vallabhe) is romping according to whim - what harm is there for you in that? Look! today this mind bursting, as it were, through the burden, of longing, being drawn along (kc,uyam`ana) to union with the beloved, by the excellent qualities of the beloved (? dayitasya). It will go itself. [?] 31. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one whose eyes are blue lotuses (kuvalaya) trembling (tarala) in the breese, she is not tormented (tapati) by the bed of kisalaya-flowers 32. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one whose charming face is an open lotus, she does not burst (sphunati) because of the arrows (vi-ikhena) of love 33. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one whose facce is very soft and sweet like nectar, she does not burn because of the malaya-breeze 34. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one whose hands and feet look like (ruci) a land-lotus (sthala-jalaruha). She does not roll around (lunhati) because of the rays of the moon 35. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one whose appearance (ruci) is that of the rising-up (samudaya) of water-filled (sajala) rainclouds, she does not break (dalati) in her heart because of long separation 36. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one who wears clothing (vasana) bright (-uci) like (ruci) the streak of gold on a touchstone, she does not sigh because of the laughter of her companions 37. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one who is an excellent (vara) youth (taruoa) for the people of the entire world, she does not bear torment (rujam) with great sorrow [? - or is it 'because of his great tenderness'?] [?] 38. Friend! she who is made love to by the forest-garlanded one ---may Hari himself (api) enter the heart with this speech, spoken by glorious Jayadeva 39. O southern (dakuina) sandalwood breeze, the bliss of the God of Love, be gracious (prasada), abandon your perversity (v`amat`am). Breath of the world, put M`adhava in front of me (puro mama) for a moment, you will be the taker [haro] of my lifebreath [?] 40. The home of a girl-friend [sakha-samv`aso] is like an enemy, this cool breeze is like fire, the moon is like poison, it burns [dunoti]. ? Towards that beloved person my heart will not turn again, even by forse. The love of this lotus-eyed (kuvalayadr-am) woman is perverse (k`amo) and completely unrestrained (lit. agains the elephant goad) 41. O malaya-breeze, make an obstacle! Love! (lit. you of five arrows), take my life. I will not again seek refuge at home. O sister of death, what is the use of your mercy? Moisten my limbs with your names [?], calm the burning of my body [??] 42. May the son of Nanda [nand`atmaja] whose mouth has a tasty [sv`adu] smile, be for the bliss of the worlds. Having place [`adhaye] the edge of a garment [or, edge of his eye- ancala] over the eye of R`adh`a, in a manner shaking in embarrasment.
